How to Wash a Puffer Jacket or Down Jacket (Without Ruining the Fill)
Step-by-step: how to wash and dry a puffer or down jacket at home without clumping, plus down vs synthetic fill and fill power, from a textile engineer.
The short answer
Most puffer jackets can be washed at home: front-loading machine, gentle cycle, cool or warm water, a down-specific wash (or a mild liquid detergent for synthetic fill), extra rinse, then tumble dry on low heat with two or three clean tennis or dryer balls until completely dry. The drying stage is what restores the loft, and it takes longer than you expect.
People often avoid washing puffers because they are afraid of clumping. Clumping happens when the fill is not dried fully. Here is the method, from more than 14 years of working with fabrics and finishes.
Before you wash: check the fill
- Down: the soft clusters from the underside of ducks or geese. Very warm for its weight, packs small, but loses warmth when wet.
- Synthetic fill: polyester fibres that imitate down. Heavier for the same warmth, but keeps insulating when damp and dries faster.
- Fill power (for down): the volume one ounce of down fills, in cubic inches. 550–650 is good everyday down; 700–800+ is premium, lighter and warmer.
The care label tells you which you have, and whether the maker allows machine washing.
How to wash a puffer jacket
- Empty the pockets and close all zips and press studs. Open the underarm vents if there are any.
- Use a front-loader, or a top-loader without a central agitator. An agitator can tear baffles.
- Add a down wash for down jackets. For synthetic fill, a small amount of mild liquid detergent works. Avoid powder, bleach and fabric softener, which coat the down.
- Choose a gentle or delicate cycle, cool to 30 °C, with an extra rinse to clear all detergent.
- Spin gently to remove water. The jacket will look flat and lumpy at this stage. That is normal.
How to dry it (the important part)
- Tumble dry on low heat with two or three clean tennis balls or wool dryer balls. They break up clumps as it tumbles.
- Stop every 20–30 minutes, take the jacket out, and shake and fluff it, breaking up any clumps with your hands.
- Keep going until it is completely dry, often 2–3 hours for a down jacket. Any remaining damp inside will clump and can smell.
- No dryer? Dry flat in a warm, airy spot out of direct sun, and fluff it by hand every few hours for a day or two.
How often to wash
Once or twice a season is enough for most people, or when it looks visibly dirty or flat. Over-washing wears out the shell and the down’s natural oils.

Why is my puffer jacket lumpy after washing?
The fill is still damp, or it needs more tumbling. Put it back in the dryer on low with tennis balls and fluff it every 20–30 minutes until fully dry.
Can I wash a puffer jacket in a top loader?
Only one without a central agitator, on a gentle cycle. Otherwise hand wash in a bath.
Can I dry clean a down jacket?
Many makers advise against it, because dry-cleaning solvents can strip the natural oils from down. Follow the care label.
Down or synthetic: which is better?
Down is lighter and warmer for dry cold. Synthetic is better for wet conditions and easier to care for. For layering under a puffer, see our guide to thermal underwear.
